Dean Jeffries: 50 Fabulous Years in Hot Rods, Racing & Film

Book Description

An unassuming craftsman, legendary car builder Dean Jeffries has always preferred to let his creations speak for themselves. This book provides a rare, close-up look at the man, and the life, behind the Mantaray, the Monkeemobile, the Green Hornet's Black Beauty, and James Bond's moon buggy, among countless others.

Drawing on extensive interviews with Jeffries, bestselling Motorbooks author Tom Cotter gives readers the inside story on how, with little more than determination, raw talent, and a high school education, Jeffries became such an extraordinary figure in the automotive world. Cotter details the multiple careers Jeffries mastered at once, from custom painting and pinstriping to metal shaping and design. The book offers Jeffries' own account of the circumstances behind the famous TV and movie cars that followed, as well as the relationships he enjoyed with personalities as varied as A. J. Foyt, Steve McQueen, James Dean, Bruce Lee, Parnelli Jones, and Elvis Presley. Cotter also chronicles Jeffries work on well-known hot rods, sports cars, and Indy racers—including the 21 starting cars Jeffries painted in a single Indianapolis 500. Featuring more than 200 images from Jeffries' own archive, here finally is a book that truly brings to life the man behind the legend.

Just Customz Review

Tom Cotter has written a book that is very readable with lots of photos from Dean Jeffries private collection and is sure to have something to keep everyone interested. The book covers most aspects of Dean Jeffries life from the love of his life Rosalie through to his creations for both celebrities and films.

Dean Jeffries was one of the biggest names in car customising and his when he moved to Hollywood his shop became a hangout for celebrities such as Steve McQueen, James Mansfield and Elvis Presley. In the book Dean says "Elvis used to hang out in my shop because nobody would bother him there!" and goes on to say "I never built any cars for him, and wasn't a heavy duty car guy, but he hung out with me to get away from people" which is testament to his popularity at the time.

During his career his has build cars that most people have probably seen but didn't realise that they were built by Jeffries. Some of the more familiar cars include the Monkey Mobile as seen on the Monkees, the 1932 Ford 3 window coupe that appears on the cover of the Beach Boys' Little Deuce Coupe album and many more.

When you mention Dean Jeffries to some car enthusiasts they will tell you about the rivalry between Jeffries and Barris. Barris was another well known car customiser of the same era as Jeffries who were once friends and worked together. The book talks about how the rift came about and even talks to Barris about it. Barris mentions that they should bury the hatchet on their bitterness and move on

Finally, you can mention Dean Jeffries without mentioning the famous Mantaray which Jeffries toured the world with for 5 years. The book has some superb pictures of how he fabricated the car and formed the aluminium shell.
